What are the two tracks? Which one should I apply for?
We have identified two main avenues of self-development on the fellowship: Language and Professional.
While all fellows will spend the winter semester studying studying Chinese at the MTC, with the final term with the option to pursue a work placement at a startup of their choice, the spring will either involve an additional work placement or a further semester of Chinese studies.
The choice of track is entirely up to your own personal preference and judgement. We do recommend, however, that candidates with no or minimal Chinese experience apply for the language development path.

Is there an age restriction?
Nothing enforced! Anyone who will have graduated from college by June 2024 is welcome to join us. Although we have a preference for recent graduates, we ultimately believe that a candidate's mindset is more important than their specific graduation year.
What if I don't want to pursue an internship?
There is no one set path for fellows to take, no specific internship or role we mandate. The traditional internship period can therefore be exchanged for a personal project: write your poetry anthology, take an underwater basket weaving course, kickstart your dance career. We only ask that you clarify your plans beforehand with the program manager, and file a report detailing your project and its aims.
How much does this fellowship cost?
Nothing. Zero. Zip.
This is a paid fellowship, and fellows are supported by monthly stipends, free housing, healthcare, and flights to and from the U.S.

What are your selection criteria?
While we are not tied to any one college, as a selective program we look towards top U.S. school graduates.
A background in Chinese is not required, however we are looking for globally minded and flexible candidates who will thrive in a new environment.

How important are interviews?
The interview process (see: APPLY) is the most significant way in which we evaluate your potential for the fellowship; no candidate will be offered a position without first interviewing.
Do you offer additional accommodations?
We are determined to make our fellowship accessible to all, and therefore encourage people of all backgrounds to apply, secure in the knowledge that we will provide additional accommodations as needed or requested.
What educational background do I need?
Any four year bachelor's degree from a ranked U.S. university or program is acceptable. Master's degrees are also accepted but not required.
Where do I go after this fellowship?
VELD aims to support you in your professional development no matter which route you continue down. Here we've compiled some ideas as to what you might be prepared for or which direction you may pivot to post-fellowship.
What training will I undergo?
Your first few months on the fellowship will see you through multiple rounds of training, including safeguarding, teaching, cultural, linguistic and diversity. Much of the subsequent training, other than through leadership seminars, will then take place on the job. As senior fellows in 2024 you will also be responsible for managing much of the onboarding and training process for the incoming fellows.
What impact can I have on the fellowship?
At VELD we are always looking to better ourselves and learn from the people on the ground. As a member of the inaugural cohort, you will have the chance to shape the culture of the fellowship as it grows and develops, and to nurture the environment you wish to see in the program.
Do I need to be an American citizen?
Not at all! Unfortunately due to Taiwanese visa restrictions, applicants will need to be a citizen of one of 62 nations with English as the official or designated common language. Full list here.
How important is my GPA?
At VELD, we practice holistic admissions. We believe there are many other factors that predict fellowship success, both as a learner and as a leader, and we therefore try to look beyond letter grades. For fringe candidates, or for the purpose of distinguishing between two similar applicants, we may examine your GPA more closely, looking particularly within your major.
Can I take a gap year from college to join the fellowship?
In short, no. Special cases, however, are reviewed on an individual basis. Please contact us for more information or schedule a meeting to clarify your situation.
